The NFL trade deadline is just over three weeks away, and with the Jets 0-6, general manager Darren Mougey is sure to be busy fielding calls.
Sources tell SNY NFL Insider Connor Hughes that edge rusher Jermaine Johnson is a name that has come up for several teams in need of help rushing the quarterback.
A team involved in those trade talks told Hughes it would take "a lot" for the Jets to part ways with Johnson, who is surely a hot commodity given that he’s just 26 and is still on his rookie contract (The Jets have already picked up his fifth-year option for 2026).
Two front office sources unaffiliated with the Jets said there is absolutely value in Johnson, a premier player against the run and solid pass rusher. The two sources from two different teams both agreed a first-round pick is too rich. A second-rounder is possible, but a third-rounder would be most likely, though compensation can increase if two teams bid against each other.
Johnson earned Pro Bowl honors in 2023, when he racked up 7.5 sacks and 11 tackles for loss, but injuries have plagued him ever since. Johnson played just two games in 2024 due to a torn Achilles and missed time this season due to an ankle injury.
Overall, the 2022 first-round pick has totaled 11.0 sacks and 16 tackles for loss in 36 career regular season games.
The trade deadline is Tuesday, Nov. 4 at 4 p.m.
