The Los Angeles Chargers and Kansas City Chiefs helped YouTube set a record during their Week 1 matchup. The game — which was the first-ever NFL contest broadcast on YouTube — set the record for most concurrent viewers of a live stream on the platform, YouTube announced Monday.
A total of 17.3 million global viewers tuned in as Justin Herbert and the Chargers pulled off the narrow 27-21 win over Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs. The game, which was viewed in over 230 different countries and territories, drew an average of 16.2 million viewers in the United States and 1.1 million viewers outside the country.
YouTube attempted to go all out in its coverage of the event. In addition to bringing on popular YouTube personalities like Mr. Beast and Deestroying to play a role, the platform also had former NFL stars like Derek Carr and Cam Newton providing pregame and postgame analysis.
While it was a record-setting broadcast, it wasn't necessarily a success. The contest, which was free to watch on YouTube, failed to set a league streaming record, per Eric Fisher of Front Office Sports. Netflix holds that record, as over 24 million fans tuned in to watch the platform's Christmas Eve doubleheader last season.
The Chargers-Chiefs game did draw more views compared to last year's Week 1 contest between the Green Bay Packers and Philadelphia Eagles in Brazil, but even that comes with a caveat. The Packers-Eagles game — which drew 14.2 million viewers in the U.S. — was only available on Peacock, a subscription service. YouTube, which is free, was expected to exceed that figure by a bigger margin.
Fans who did tune in to the contest were not disappointed by the play on the field. The game came down to the wire, with Herbert needing a last-second scramble on a 3rd and 14 to prevent the Chiefs from getting one final drive down by six.
YouTube isn't expected to stream another NFL game this season, but will play a role in the league's Super Bowl flag football game in February.
