Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson is dealing with a shoulder injury and won't participate in the team's minicamp next week, head coach Shane Steichen announced on Thursday.
Steichen told reporters Richardson has no timeline, but that he hopes the QB can return "at some point" during training camp.
Per ESPN's Stephen Holder, Richardson reported some soreness and will rest his shoulder, which is the same one he had AC joint surgery on in 2023. Surgery is reportedly not necessary. Richardson participated in the Colts' OTAs last week.
Richardson's injury will give a golden opportunity to Daniel Jones, whom the team signed in March. At the time, Steichen said Richardson and Jones would split the first-team reps going into training camp.
"It’s going to come down to who’s the most consistent, who’s the most productive, will be the starter," Steichen said in March, via Joel Erickson of the Indianapolis Star.
Richardson played just four games in 2023 before his injury, then had mixed results last season as the team went 8-9. He completed 126 of 264 passes (47.7 completion percentage) for eight touchdowns in 11 games. Richardson also threw 12 interceptions.
Jones, the No. 6 overall pick in 2019, played in 10 games for the Giants last season before being benched in favor of Drew Lock. In those 10 games, he completed 63.6% of his passes and threw eight touchdowns against seven interceptions.
The other quarterback on the Colts' current roster is former Notre Dame QB Riley Leonard, whom they drafted in the sixth round of this year's draft.
